Reception children:
- Are motivated to show confidence and independence carrying out activities
- Are expected to respond to simple instructions in English, join in with repeated rhymes and stories by the end of the school year
- Are taught to link sounds to letters, as a result they show interest in illustrations and print in books, understand the concept of a word
- Acquire mathematical concepts of addition and subtraction, recognize numerals from 1 to 10, and use language to describe shape, size and position. All the activities children do in pre-school allow them to build up vocabulary and use more complex sentences in English.
